@Ranjeet: I agree and you see it's not only novice users but just about everyone... As for the blank passwd if you logout then your are busted... The only way you can save the file is booting with a live cd and see if you can copy the live cd's passwd. Still it's gonna be a patchwork...

nothing beats the stupidity of users ... however secure/strong ur systems are ...

i think these days if someone overwrites /etc/passwd or blanks it accidently ... it should be fine ... as passwords are stored in /etc/shadow

the only task required would be re-creating /etc/passwd

but your article drives the point well :-)

I don't know I missed this article before ... it's funny but it must have been horrible when these things happened. You also explained each situation really well - I didn't fully understand what was wrong with what the user was doing but your explanation helped me follow it.

One time I was trying to connect my tv to my video card using the s video. Everything was connected properly and the tv was recognized as the 2nd display but nothing would show up on the television screen. While playing with the settings I changed the tv to the primary rather than secondary display. Of course, I couldn't change it back because I couldn't see anything on a blank screen :-) I had to pull out the video card and reset it in order for things to go back to the way they were.
